The Indus River System Authority (Irsa) has protested over the release of additional 3,600 cusecs water per day by Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) for power generation from Tarbela in violation of the rules set by the government. An official source told Business Recorder here that Wapda has released 3,500 cusecs of water from Tarbela in place of 1,500 cusecs per day, which has irked Irsa and the provinces.

Earlier this week, it was decided in the meeting with federal Water and Power Minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi that Wapda would release 1,500 cusecs more water from Tarbela against the intent of 8,000 cusecs.

It was also decided in the meeting that 1,500 cusecs additional water would be released from Sindh's share and would be stored at Chashma for release in February for irrigation purposes.

It was decided that 1,500 cusecs of water to be released from Tarbela would be used to generate power to overcome loadshedding in the country.

But to increase power generation Wapda has increased the quantity of water by almost double of the agreed figure without taking Irsa in confidence, the source added.

The source said that Irsa Chairman Aman Gul Khattak has written a letter to the Wapda chairman and the federal government over this violation and asked them to curtail the quantity of additional water.

However, the chairman has asked them that Wapda can continue with the release of 1,500 cusecs water, it added.

Due to rains the water availability has improved in the country and on the other hand, the crops has also received adequate water, therefore, the provinces do not need water for wheat for the next few weeks and they want to store their share of water for utilisation in February.
